Have you ever been blatantly lied to when trying to do something good? For my wife and me, a pet shop “scam” involving a fake Shiba Inu didn’t just break our trust—it became a decade-long destiny. This is the story of Deokgu, a dog sold as a “purebred” who ended up building his own miraculous family in the hills of Paju, South Korea.
The “100% Shiba Inu” That Wasn’t
Years ago, at a shop in Bucheon, we were sold a puppy the owner swore was a purebred Shiba Inu. Even then, we knew: he was a classic Shiba Inu mix, a charming Sigorjab-reu (Korean village dog). My wife insisted, “If we don’t take him, nobody will.” So, Deokgu became the newest member of our family.

The Dog That Changed Everything
Before Deokgu, our house was peaceful—perhaps a bit too quiet—with our calm seniors, Dorothy and Leo. Then came Deokgu, a whirlwind of energy. He would zoom through the living room and fearlessly pester his big brother Leo to play. Yet, when the sun went down, his “absurdly cute” side took over, as he refused to sleep anywhere except tucked right next to Leo

Because of this one little guy, the entire atmosphere of our home shifted from silence to constant laughter and vitality. Deokgu wasn’t just a pet; he was the spark that changed our lives.
The Move to Paju and the Rainy Day Incident
Our lives shifted when we moved to a rural house in Paju. Here, the landscape is dotted with “yard dogs”—animals often left to guard properties with little care. One neighbor was Kkotnimi, a white dog who began visiting our yard for food.
Then came a stormy summer day. Deokgu managed to escape for about four hours. He returned soaked to the bone, looking rather pleased with himself. We scolded him for the Rainy Day Incident, but we had no idea those four hours had set a “butterfly effect” in motion.

A Tragic Discovery: Terrifying Signs for Any Dog Owner
Months later, we received news that Kkotnimi had given birth to five puppies. One look at them and we knew—they were identical to Deokgu. However, our joy was instantly crushed. The puppies were being raised in a dark, cold shelter, huddled together on the hard ground, far from the warmth a newborn needs.

By the time we intervened, the tragedy had already unfolded. Four of the five puppies had already passed away. Only Kkotnimi and one tiny puppy—Jenny—remained, barely clinging to life.
Why Mixed-Breed Dogs (Village Dogs) Deserve More Love
In Korea, village dogs like Deokgu are often overlooked. However, they are incredibly resilient and intelligent. While purebreds often face genetic issues, mixed breeds like ours often boast better long-term health and a fighting spirit, provided they receive the care they deserve.

When we finally rescued them, Jenny’s condition was heart-wrenching. She was incredibly small, fragile, and showing symptoms that would make any owner’s blood run cold: she was passing green stool and coffee-colored urine.

The Reality: A Battle Against Time
At that moment, we knew we might lose her.
For any dog owner, these are the most terrifying signs.
- Green/Bloody Stool: A hallmark of severe viral infections like Parvovirus.
- Coffee-colored Urine: A sign of extreme dehydration or internal distress. Every second counts in these situations. Immediate, intensive veterinary care is the only bridge between life and death.

A Miracle We Almost Lost
Despite the odds stacked against her, Jenny began her miracle recovery.
It was the start of a long journey—from the mud to the master suite of Paju Paradise.
A journey we almost never got to see.

The Reunion: Father Meets Daughter
After a miracle recovery, the moment finally came: introducing Deokgu to his surprise family. We didn’t know how he would react, or if he would even recognize them. But the moment he saw her, something just clicked.
Deokgu, now a father. Will he recognize his daughter, Jenny? The tense and heartwarming first meeting!
Still afraid of people and her new surroundings right after the rescue—the very first stage of healing.

What started as an outdoor rescue ended with Kkotnimi and Jenny taking over an entire room in our house. They are no longer “yard dogs”; they are the “Queens of Paju Paradise.”

Looking back, that pet shop owner’s lie was the best thing that ever happened to us. Sometimes, the biggest lies in life lead to the most unexpected love.

But every story here began long before Deokgu.
Honoring the Legacy of Our First Leader, Dorothy
While we celebrate these miraculous new beginnings with Deokgu’s family, we can never forget the dog who started it all. Dorothy was the true heart and leader of Paju Paradise.
